Microdiscectomy Performed in Houston, Cypress, Tomball & The Woodlands, TX
A microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive spinal decompression procedure that may be considered to address a painful herniated disc in the low back (lumbar spine). The goal is to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or a spinal nerve root by removing a portion of the damaged disc.
R. Alexander Mohr, MD, performs microdiscectomy and other complex spine procedures in Houston, Cypress, Tomball and The Woodlands, Texas. A board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mohr practices with Advanced Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute. If you’re experiencing disruptive low back pain, he can help you find the right solution.
How Can a Microdiscectomy Help?
Situated between vertebrae, the spinal discs serve as shock-absorbing cushions, preventing the spinal bones from grinding against each other during movement. Due to sudden trauma or gradual degeneration, a disc can rupture. Some of its soft, gel-like interior may then escape through the breach and invade the spinal canal, a tight space that houses sensitive nerve tissues. The displaced disc material can press on nearby nerves, such as the sciatic nerve in the lumbar spine. If compressed or otherwise irritated, the sciatic nerve may transmit erroneous signals, which the brain may interpret as pain that radiates down the back of the legs (sciatica).
In many cases, sciatica can be managed without surgery. However, Dr. Mohr may suggest a microdiscectomy if you have been experiencing certain symptoms of a lumbar herniated disc for more than 12 weeks, such as:
- Pain that interferes with your daily activities
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Numbness, tingling sensations or muscle weakness
