When Is Lumbar Total Disc Replacement Surgery Appropriate?
After thoroughly assessing your spine and performing some diagnostic tests, Dr. Mohr can determine if a lumbar total disc replacement is appropriate for you. In general, he may suggest this treatment approach if:
- The source of your low back pain can be traced to a single damaged disc in your lumbar spine
- You do not have severe osteoarthritis of the spine
- You do not have spinal cord compression or spinal nerve root compression
- You have not previously had spine surgery
- You are not excessively overweight
- You do not have scoliosis or another spinal deformity
What Does Lumbar Total Disc Replacement Surgery Involve?
If you elect to proceed with a lumbar disc replacement, here’s a general idea of what you can expect: During your procedure, you will be lying on your back. After making an incision in your abdomen, Dr. Mohr will move aside the underlying tissues to access your spine. He will then remove the damaged disc, insert an artificial disc in its place and close the incision.
Over the next few months, your spine will adjust to the implanted device and your body will recover from the surgery. Dr. Mohr will provide detailed post-operative instructions and a timeline for your recovery (recovery times can vary among patients).
