Cervical Laminoplasty Surgery Performed in Houston, Cypress & Tomball, TX
A cervical laminoplasty is a type of spinal decompression surgery that is sometimes performed to address spinal narrowing (stenosis) in the neck region. Spinal stenosis may require surgical treatment if the spinal cord or a nerve root is pressured by the narrowing. A compressed spinal nerve can provide disruptive symptoms, such as localized and radiating pain, muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling sensations. In severe cases, spinal cord compression can also cause difficulty walking or impair bladder or bowel control.
What Does a Cervical Laminoplasty Involve?
The goal of a cervical laminoplasty is to enlarge the spinal canal in the neck region. The lamina is a section of bone that forms a rigid “roof” over the spinal canal. During a laminoplasty, the surgeon essentially makes an opening in that roof to create more space for overcrowded tissues. For instance, herniated disc material, bone spurs, or thickened ligaments may be taking up excess space in the spinal canal and causing nerve compression. More specifically, the surgeon creates a “hinge” on one side of the lamina, then wedges the other side open with a piece of bone (strut) or a small metal plate.
